Hubs & metahub: medical information is shared among health care providers
Patients' medical records are increasingly scattered, among a wide range of health care providers and health care institutions. The electronic exchange of your health information can be of great benefit in many cases. That's why our hospital has joined the Hubs & Metahub system.
The purpose of the system is to allow any Belgian healthcare provider to consult the available electronic medical documents relating to a patient they are treating/providing care for, regardless of where they are stored. The system has been designed in such a way that the protection of the patient's privacy is respected at all times, and that health data is exchanged according to the rules (informed consent, therapeutic relationship, etc., …). The system is supported by the FPS Public Health (national ehealth project).
Data is exchanged without centralization of the data, which therefore requires good cooperation between the hubs and the ehealth platform. The introduction of a "reference directory" allows you to locate all documents. The reference directory keeps track of where each patient's health information can be found (e.g., at a particular hospital). The directory itself does not contain any substantive health data
Healthcare providers and healthcare facilities can access the system through one of five hubs: Réseau Santé Wallon (RSW), Collaboratief Zorgplatform (CoZo), Vlaams Ziekenhuisnetwerk KU Leuven (VznKUL), het Brussels gezondheidsnetwerk (Abrumet) and Antwerpse Regionale Hub (ARH).
The hospitals choose one Hub. Each Hub distributes leaflets to inform patients about the possibility of having their medical records included in the exchange system. (only treating healthcare provider, possibility to exclude certain healthcare providers, right to amend personal data, etc.) and each patient must give their prior written or electronic consent (Informed Consent) for the exchange.
