Internship preparation
- About 1 week before the start of your internship, you contact the internship department to announce your internship.
- You make the necessary arrangements for your first day of internship.
- You prepare and download the necessary documents.
- Medical ward: hygiene measures and medical ward checklist
- Non-medical ward: non-medical ward checklist
- The checklist specifies the steps you need to take next. Here you can already find the department brochures. If you can't find them immediately, it's best to contact the department.
Internship guidance
AZ Jan Portaels invests year after year in the training of our internal internship mentors. To ensure their knowledge aligns optimally with your needs, it is important that you communicate your personal learning needs and objectives. You may be confronted with complex and emotional situations that you find difficult to handle on your own. If you feel the need to talk to someone about this, you can always turn to your internship mentor. Don't hesitate to ask questions, discuss issues. We are committed to guiding you as best as possible... Because perhaps one day you will be our colleague!
Internship attire
- If you wear your personal internship attire, it must be spotless and preferably washed separately at 60°C. You wear the internship attire exclusively within the hospital.
- If you do not have personal internship attire but need to wear work attire, you indicate your needs during the contact moment with the department where you are interning.
- Please note! The hospital cannot provide work attire for everyone. Only final year nursing students and postgraduate students can receive work attire from the hospital.
- Headscarves (covering only the hair) can be found at the reception. You can also deposit used headscarves here.
- The work footwear must meet the following requirements: a closed shoe with a silent non-slip sole, a good round shape at the top of the foot, and support behind the heel. The footwear is flexible and washable.
Student badge
- Not all interns are provided with a personalized badge. Only final year nursing students and postgraduate students receive a badge with their name.
- Other interns receive a badge indicating "student" + number. Everyone on the work floor is always identifiable by means of a badge indicating "student" + your number.
- Students pay a deposit of €10 in cash for the numeric badge. This deposit is refunded to them on the last day of the internship when returning the badge.
Facilities for students - Meals
- The cafeteria is located on level 0 (zero) B. Here, you can enjoy a hot meal at the staff rate of 3.10 euros, including a drink. If desired, you can also purchase a sandwich with a salad and a drink for the same price.
- Unable to leave the department in time to have a hot meal in the cafeteria? You can request to have a meal set aside by phone.
- If you have a night shift, you can request a meal from the supervisor of the department where you are interning. You will then receive a bread meal on the department, just like our regular night nurses.
- In the hospital lobby, there is also an unmanned store called "Market 24/7". In these vending machines, you can find a wide range of fresh and healthy drinks, snacks, cold and hot meals.
Dressing room
The dressing rooms for students are located on level 1K. Students can access the dressing rooms with their badge. The lockers have an automatic code lock. The instructions for use are posted in the dressing room. Please note, 16 hours after setting a code and locking the locker, it will automatically open. This way, we want to give everyone the opportunity to use a locker.
The employment regulations and code of ethics
The employment regulations
Agreements regarding, among others, smoking, cellphone use, etc. The employment regulations are accessible via the intranet and are also available for review at the Human Resources department.
Code of ethics
Students will observe professional secrecy and confidentiality obligations during interactions with patients, family, and visitors. They may not disclose anything they learn about patients, treatment, or patient identities, even after the contract has ended. They may not access medical and personal data except those of the patients entrusted to them. Serious breaches of professional secrecy may result in the termination of the internship.
Regardless of the department where you are interning or the purpose of your internship, we ask you to always respect the following:
- Neat appearance
- Respect for applicable hygiene regulations (hand hygiene, wearing a face mask on designated days, etc.)
- Respectful interaction with people (patients, employees, etc.) around you
Unforeseen absence and illness
Notify the department where you are interning, in addition to your school, in the event of unforeseen absence. Also, indicate how long you expect to be absent.
Work accident or needlestick injury
In the event of an accident (of all kinds) during the internship or while traveling to and from the hospital, you must report it to the school as soon as possible and have the necessary documents filled out.
For a needlestick injury, the head nurse will send you to the emergency department along with the provided documents (which you will receive from the school). You should also report this incident to the school.
Vacation work or applying for a job?
Are you interested in doing vacation work or applying for a job? Take advantage of your internship to inquire about our job vacancies, salary, and employee benefits. Discuss this with your internship mentor and/or department supervisor, or schedule an appointment with our internal recruiter. You can also provide this information in the Google Forms that you will receive via email at the end of your internship.
