Quitting smoking
Do you want to quit smoking but aren't sure how to start? Then smoking cessation counseling is definitely for you.
Smoking cessation support with a tobacco specialist
Quitting smoking can be quite a challenge. With smoking cessation counseling, you receive help from a certified tobacco specialist. A certified tobacco specialist is a healthcare professional or psychologist with a government-recognized diploma in "Tobaccology and Smoking Cessation Counseling." Please note: not every tobacco specialist is certified. Partial reimbursement is only available for consultations with certified specialists.
Scientific research shows that the likelihood of successfully quitting is highest when a tobacco specialist's guidance is combined with smoking cessation medication. The tobacco specialist will guide you through this process and provide information about medications that help manage physical withdrawal symptoms. Together, you'll choose the best treatment suited to you. Your smoking habits and behaviors will be discussed, and you'll explore how to change them. A quit date and plan will be established together. The cessation process is thoroughly prepared, ensuring you have the necessary tools and tips to face your quit day. Afterward, your progress will be carefully monitored.
Individual guidance
What happens during your first visit to a tobacco specialist? You’ll discuss when and how much you smoke. This helps the specialist understand your smoking behavior. From there, you will begin the journey to quit smoking.
Initially, you will meet with the specialist weekly to receive strong support, which increases your chance of sticking with your goal. After the 3rd or 4th session, more time will pass between appointments. The number of sessions required to quit smoking is up to you, decided in consultation with the specialist.
Treatment options
There are two types of medication: nicotine-based and non-nicotine-based.
-
Nicotine-based medication
- Known as nicotine replacements, these medications deliver a controlled dose of nicotine, which is gradually reduced, helping manage cravings and withdrawal symptoms. The different forms will be discussed in detail during counseling.
-
Non-nicotine-based medication
- This type of medication works differently by reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms associated with quitting smoking. It is prescribed by a doctor and is taken for 12 weeks.
